The UK Immigration System Explained

Understanding the UK immigration system can be a daunting task, but it’s important for anyone who wants to live or work in the country. In this article, we’ll break down the basics of UK immigration and provide an overview of the different types of visas available.

The UK has introduced a points-based immigration system. The points-based system includes a route for skilled workers who have a job offer from an approved employer sponsor.

The job you’re offered will need to be at a required skill level of RQF3 or above (equivalent to A level). You’ll also need to be able to speak English and be paid the relevant salary threshold by your sponsor. This will either be the general salary threshold of £25,600 or the going rate for your job, whichever is higher.

If you earn less than this - but no less than £20,480 - you may still be able to apply by ‘trading’ points on specific characteristics against your salary. For example, if you have a job offer in a shortage occupation or have a PhD relevant to the job.

Types of Visas

The most common type of visa is a Tier 2 General work visa, which allows individuals to work in the UK for a specific employer. This visa is valid for up to five years and requires an application fee as well as proof that you have a job offer from an approved employer.

Another popular type of visa is the Tier 4 Student Visa, which allows students to study in the UK at an approved educational institution. This visa is also valid for up to five years and requires an application fee as well as proof that you are enrolled in an approved program.

Other types of visas include Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visas, which are designed for entrepreneurs who want to set up or take over a business in the UK; Tier 5 Temporary Worker Visas, which are designed for those who want to take on short-term roles such as au pairs or seasonal workers; and Tier 2 Intra Company Transfer Visas, which allow employees with experience working outside the UK to transfer their skills and knowledge into their new role in the country.

Application Processes

Applying for any type of visa can be complicated and time-consuming so it’s important to make sure you understand all aspects of your application before submitting it. It’s also important to note that different visas may require different documents or evidence so make sure you read through all requirements carefully before applying.

Once your application is submitted, it will be reviewed by immigration officials who will then decide if your application meets all requirements and whether or not you should be granted a visa.

Navigating the UK immigration system can seem intimidating at first but understanding what types of visas available and what documents are required makes it much easier. If you’re looking to live or work in the UK, researching your options and taking steps towards meeting eligibility requirements will help ensure that your application process goes smoothly.

Knowing how each type of visa works will also help ensure that you get the right kind of visa for your situation so be sure to do your research before submitting any applications.
