Indefinite Leave to Remain: What You Need to Know

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a type of visa that allows individuals to live and work indefinitely in the United Kingdom.

It is a common route for individuals looking to make the UK their permanent home, as it gives them the freedom to live and work without any restrictions or time limits. In this blog post, we'll take a look at what ILR entails and how you can apply for it.

What Is Indefinite Leave To Remain?

ILR is a status granted by the UK government that allows foreign nationals from outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, who have already been living in the UK for five years or more, to stay permanently in the country. Those with ILR can also apply for British Citizenship after 12 months.

Who Can Apply For ILR?

In order to be eligible for ILR, you must first have held valid leave (visa) in one of these categories: Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 4, Tier 5 or as a businessperson; an Ancestry visa; or as a family member of an EEA national under European law.

The length of your stay prior to applying will depend on which category you are applying under. For example, if you have been living in the UK on a Tier 1 visa then you must have been here for five years before applying for ILR. If you are applying as an EEA family member, then you only need two years’ residence before being eligible for ILR.
