Marriage Visitor Visa Explained

If you or someone you know is planning to visit the UK for marriage or civil partnership, you will need a Marriage Visitor Visa. This visa allows people visiting the UK for marriage or a civil partnership to stay in the country for six months. In this blog post, we’ll explore what a marriage visitor visa is and how it works.

Who Qualifies for a Marriage Visitor Visa?

A marriage visitor visa is meant for individuals who are not citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) and who do not already have permission to stay in the UK.

The visa allows people to come to the UK with the intention of getting married or entering into a civil partnership. It does not allow applicants to work in the country, study long-term, or receive public funds while they are here.

In order to qualify for this type of visa, applicants must meet certain criteria, including:

  • Being 18 years old or over at the time of application.

  • Having enough money to support themselves during their stay without needing help from public funds.

  • Planning on leaving the UK at the end of their visit.

  • Not being related by blood or adoption to their partner.

  • Showing that they are both free to marry/enter into a civil partnership as outlined by British law.

  • Meeting all other requirements set out by immigration laws.

If an applicant meets all of these criteria, then they can apply for a marriage visitor visa. The application process typically takes around three weeks from when it was submitted and accepted until when it is approved. Sometimes circumstances mean it takes longer.

What Does a Marriage Visitor Visa Allow You To Do?

This type of visa grants applicants’ permission to enter and remain in the UK for up to 6 months so that they can get married/enter into a civil partnership here.

It also allows them to do certain activities while they are in the country such as studying short courses (up to 30 days), volunteering, receiving private medical treatment, taking part in sports/creative events, and attending weddings/funerals (as guests).

However, any activities done must be done without receiving payment/public funds and must comply with immigration laws.

A marriage visitor visa is a great option if you want to get married or enter into a civil partnership in Britain but don't meet all of the requirements necessary for an EEA family permit or spousal visa.

Before applying though it's important that you understand what this type of visa allows you - and doesn't allow you - to do while in Britain so that your time here goes smoothly and efficiently. Speak to a member of our team to find out more.
