Think about your Facebook account in your Will

As you plan for the future and make arrangements for your digital legacy, consider how to best handle what might be one of your most important online presences: Your Facebook account. What fate would you want it to have?

For those who have wanted to keep the memory of their loved ones alive, Facebook has implemented a special feature - Memorialised Accounts. With this feature friends and family can commemorate an individual by preserving their profile in its current state as they remember them- complete with photos, posts and other memories that were once shared on it.

It's just one more way for people to honour someone close who is no longer present but still very much remembered.

Make sure your legacy is taken care of. Nominate a Facebook friend or family member as an official “legacy contact” so they can handle the important decisions regarding your account after you pass on. Give yourself peace of mind by knowing that even when no longer here, those closest to you will honour and protect how you wish for it all to be preserved.

A Legacy Contact is capable of a variety of posthumous activities in order to honour the memory and legacy of the deceased.

A Legacy Contact can;

  • Write a pinned post on your profile to share a final message or details of a memorial service.

  • Update your profile picture and cover photo

  • Decide who can see and post tributes

  • See posts the deceased is tagged in and remove the tag

  • Delete your account

But don't be fooled; while they have access to quite a few options, logging into your account or reading any private messages are not among them.

Posts made after an account has been memorialised will be placed only in the Tributes section of the profile. Here friends and family can post stories, share memories and commemorate a birthday.
