Applying for British Citizenship

What is naturalisation?

If you came to the UK legally on a visa, or came from a European Economic Area (EEA), you may be eligible for British citizenship.

Before applying for naturalisation, you must make sure you have been living in the UK for a minimum of five years, and meet one of the following requirements:

  • You’ve had Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least a year

  • You’re from an EEA country and have held permanent residence for at least a year

  • You are the spouse or civil partner of someone who holds British citizenship

If you were born in the UK, you may also be able to apply for citizenship, though this can depend on your unique circumstances.
